A small family in Vantaa, passing things on.

We are not a corporation. We are parents who got tired of good things going to waste — and built a neighbourhood marketplace in the evenings.

Olemme pieni perhe Vantaalta. Äiti on suomalainen, isä nigerialainen, ja meillä on kaksi lasta, jotka kasvavat irti kaikesta yhdessä kaudessa. Vekara syntyi meidän eteisessämme: kasseja kavereille, leluja joissa oli vielä vuosia jäljellä, toppavaatteita joita ei raaskinut heittää pois.

Pyöritämme tätä kirpputoria vapaa-ajalla, töiden ja lastenhoidon lomassa. Emme tavoittele jättimäistä alustaa. Haluamme, että naapuruston perheet löytävät toisensa, ja että hyvin tehty vaate tai lelu saa uuden kierroksen sen sijaan, että se päätyy jätteeksi.

Kiertotalous alkaa kotoa. Jos haalari voi pitää toisen lapsen lämpimänä, sen pitäisi saada se mahdollisuus. Jos naapurusto voi jakaa sen mitä sillä jo on, sen pitäisi olla helppoa. Siinä on koko Vekara.

The family behind it

Mum is Finnish. Dad is Nigerian. We live in Vantaa with two kids, which means our hallway is a revolving door of sizes, seasons and “maybe someone else can use this.” We were already doing the work of a marketplace without the marketplace: messages in group chats, bags on doorsteps, the quiet guilt of throwing away something that still had life in it.

So we built Vekara in our free time. Listings, local handoffs, a little trust between parents. It is a family project with a public front door — a kids’ marketplace for clothes, toys, shoes and baby gear, run by people who actually use those things.

Why this is our work

Recycling is not an abstract slogan in a house with small children. It is the snowsuit that lasted one winter, the wooden toy that could last ten, the book that deserves another bedtime. We would rather those pieces stay in the neighbourhood than disappear into mixed waste.
